Concentrates vs ready-to-use: what dilution actually saves you

Buying cleaning chemicals ready-to-use is convenient and expensive. Most of what you are paying for and shipping around is water. Concentrates fix that, but only if your team dilutes them correctly.

The maths

A 5 L concentrate at 1:50 makes 255 L of usable solution. Bought ready-to-use in 750 ml bottles, that same volume would be 340 bottles. Even before you count the plastic and the freight, the concentrate is usually somewhere between five and ten times cheaper per litre of working solution.

Where it goes wrong

Staff eyeball the pour. A generous splash instead of a measured 20 ml can triple your chemical cost and leave residue on surfaces, which then attracts more soil. Over-dilution is just as bad: the product stops working and everyone concludes the chemical is no good.

Three things that fix it

• Use a dosing pump or a marked measuring jug. Never pour straight from the drum.
• Label every spray bottle with the product name and the dilution used. Unlabelled bottles are both a safety and a cost problem.
• Fill with water first, chemical second. It reduces foaming and gives you a more accurate mix.

Safety comes with it

Concentrates are stronger in the drum than the diluted product, so they need proper storage, gloves during decanting, and a safety data sheet on file. We supply an SDS with every chemical we sell and can run a short training session for your staff when you open an account.
